When playing cover tunes, should some leads be played note-for-note from the recordings? I don't mean blues-stuff...I expect a guitarist to show me his/her own chops on a Mustang Sally kind of tune, of course. But when playing a song to which everyone in the audience would nail perfectly in "air-guitar mode", shouldn't you give them what they want? Weigh in musicians...

I would say that it depends on the song. If everyone in the band is attempting to do everything to the T, than you should too. If you are all putting your own flavor on it than do what you want and have fun with it. We cover two songs, one we totally changed all kinds of stuff up in, and the other we tried to do just like the original. That's my two cents.

I would echo Pete on this. It totally depends on the song as far as weather a personalized version will work. We do a reggae version of "help from my friends" that works really well and gets great audience response. On the flip side if we tried to change something with a signature lead melody we would need to play that melody, even better, to deem it successful. That's why I love originals.....

Any particular song your refering to?
Say Stairway to Heaven , or Something like Crazy Train or any classic guitar song you better be as close as you can get. At least about 90 percent and in certain tunes closer to 95 percent if not 99. How would it go over if the vocals and lyrics and actual notes sung were only about 50 to 60 percent correct either because a person cant remember them or cant sing them correctly for the most part?
That is unless of course its your song and you recorded it, then you can do whatever you want, but I doubt Jimmy Page is reading this forum.

awesome, pinky. you don't think Jimmy Page is reading this??...lol. Boston's Long Time...Styx's Too Much Time On My hands...Uriah Heeps Stealin'. In my circle...it seems that everyone knows every note of those leads. What do you think?

Those are songs if you dont have at least 90 percent more like 95 for most any Boston song (which are known for the guitar parts)
In my opinion what let down, especially if the song is cruising along like clockwork or has a fantastic beginning and here comes the lead and ouch!! Its good to be strategic about song selection depending on who is in your band, thats why you dont see many bands with alot of boston cover tunes in their songlist if at all and all the vocals are another story too, same with the older rockin Styx stuff. people can say what they want about older stuff like that but playing it correctly and sounding good takes alot of skill and practice from everyone involved.
Just my opinion, for all I know a punk thrash version of come sail away or fooling yourself with a Malmsteen solo might be the new big thing.
